Chapter Twelve

Oh.

Oh, dear.

I hadn’t actually prepared myself for the possibility that he would take my invitation.

Now Carter slid down between the sheets, his jeans whispering against the fine linens, then laid his head down on the pillow, his long dark hair spilling across the white cotton. His eyes were locked on mine, and I couldn’t look away.

At last he was settled, and silence fell across us. Downstairs I heard someone cough, but between us there was only the whisper of breath.

The lights were still on, casting the room in warmth, so I could see every detail of his face. I’d thought the bed was larger than this—it had certainly seemed larger when I had invited him into it—but now he was incredibly close. I could see the dusting of stubble on his cheeks and chin, his full lips, the tiny, individual hairs on his thick eyebrows, the softness of his messy hair curling and brushing against his skin.

He was beautiful...and I was suddenly tongue-tied.

Carter seemed to sense this and he smiled at me. “I can still go back downstairs if you want me to. Just say the word.”

“Don’t.” The word came out quick, breathless. My heart was racing, my whole body suddenly awake and tense, humming with energy.

Carter stopped smiling. “Okay,” he said quietly. “I won’t.”

I swallowed.

Without taking his eyes from mine, Carter moved into a more comfortable position, shoving one arm under the pillow and pulling the other out to lie across the comforter. I stared at his tattoos, so many and so dense that it was hard to see them individually, even at this close distance. I wanted to ask him if I could get a better look, but I didn’t know how.

“Aylen?”

I tore my eyes from his arm and refocused on his face. “Yes?” I said. I tried to sound nonchalant, but my voice cracked.

“Why’d you invite me to bed?”

I wanted to be near you. That was true—but too honest. I had other reasons, though. “I wanted to talk to you.”

“Ah.” Carter nodded. “I think I can guess what you want to talk about.”

I wanted to throw out a completely random topic, just to make him laugh, but my drunken brain was too tired and too scrambled to come up with anything, so I just nodded.

He took a deep breath and rolled partially onto his back, transferring his gaze to the ceiling. “You want to know why I didn’t tell you about my job,” he said.

“Yeah.” I’d started chewing my lip. My legs were drawn up, close to me, the muscles in them shaking with tension, and I didn’t know where it came from. Perhaps I was scared of his answer.

For a long moment he didn’t say anything. Then he took another deep breath, screwed his face up, and gave the ceiling a sheepish smile. “Honestly?” he said. “For a long time I thought you knew.”

I blinked. “What?”

He looked even more sheepish. “I thought you knew,” he repeated. “So many people know who I am, especially young women your age.
